For over 35 years I have been a photographer of aficionado. As a native of Albany, NY the month of August represents Saratoga Race Track. It is a place where movie stars, celebrities and common folks can convene and cheer on the thoroughbreds.
Any one who has ever seen the movie “Seabiscuit” will undoubtedly reminisce and recall the nostalgic of what horseracing represents. It simply has that old time feeling that makes people want to come back year after year.
As an adolescent boy in search of a summer job, I use to hang around the stable and backstretch of Saratoga. It was there that I was introduced to horse racing. I met grooms, trainers, jockeys, owners and thoroughbreds. After spending many summers with renowned trainer, Woody Stevens I became obsessed and he became my hero. His enthusiasm and candor will remain with me forever. He was a special guy.
The track for me over the years has produced many friends and acquaintances including “The Chief” Allen Jerkens, Lazaro “Laz” Barrera, Angel Penna Jr, Barclay Tagg, Jonathan Sheppard, Jockeys Bobby Ussery, Manny Yczaza, Ted Atkinson, Earle Fires, and Angel Cordero Jr.
The thoroughbred as well as their off spring is very much like upper crust. They are pampered at birth, have individual personality and they know that their job in life is to run and win.
Each track and race provides a different spirit and that makes for horse racing. I’ve traveled in racing circuits, Kentucky, as well as California, etc. but ‘my heart goes to Saratoga....’
So please share my passion and enjoy my travels in horse racing.
